Vandalian Tower.
Now only a ruin but retains a majestic appearance and can be seen from the
grounds of Uppark House. Unfortunately it is on private land, but for a better
view turn right out of Uppark House on the A2146, take the first right to get a
good veiw from the gates. Just before this if you follow the South Downs Way for
about 1000 metres and then fight your way up the hill following the bare signs of
a trail you can get really close. You do not have to cross any fences or
knowingly go on to private land. Don't give up as it is worth the effort and can
be seen clearly albeit from behind a barbed wire fence.
The elegant ruins are all arches, alcoves and red brick. It was built in 1774 by Sir Harry Featherstone, the owner of Uppark to commemorate the founding of Vandalia, a new American colony or his 21st birthday. He was Emma Hamilton's first lover who went on to be Nelson's mistress. This must have been a wonderful and romantic folly in it's heyday.
