                                          The Shell House.

This remarkable little building/grotto situated within the grounds at Goodwood house was built in 1739. Both the inside and outside walls are encrusted with shells and considered to be one of the finest examples in the country. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond and her daughters worked at these exquisite floral patterns in the 1740's. Sadly it is private and cannot be visited unless you 'know' somebody. Adjacent to the Shell House is the Duke's Loo, with three seats inside and the remains of some paneling. Unfortunately with no 'listed' status it is becoming dilapidated.

You are not going to believe this but the floor of the shell house is made up of horse and cattle teeth. A brilliant follyish idea.
