Hiorn's Tower.

This magnificent gothic tower was designed by Francis Hiorn (1744-1789) for the 11th duke of Norfolk. It was built as an example of how Arundel Castle was to be renovated and occupies an elevated position in Arundel Park. This is up behind the castle in Arundel. From the Park gates you have to walk about 500 metres. Described in 1818 as the 'grand banqueting house it acted as a prospect tower for the Duke and his guests. It was occupied as recently as 1962 after which it gradually deteriorated until being fully restored in 1992. If you want a Folly like this you need a lot of money. The second photo shows the wonderful knapped flintwork. 36 'squared up' flints set in a box and chequered with stone blocks.         Click castle to return.
